New Faces from New Places

NC IDEA Newsletter – July 18, 2017



NC IDEA announced today the election of Karen LeVert as Board Chair; along with the election of three new directors Peyton Anderson of RTP, Greg Brown of Charlotte and Patti Gillenwater of Raleigh.

“The leadership and guidance of our Board enables us to advance the Foundation’s mission and vision,” said Thom Ruhe, President and CEO of NC IDEA. “Our newest members are distinguished members of North Carolina’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and bring a wealth of expertise and energy to our activities. We are fortunate to have such accomplished business leaders supporting our efforts to strengthen the entrepreneurial future of North Carolina,” Ruhe concluded.

Karen LeVert has served on NC IDEA’s board for two years prior to being elected Chair. She is currently President and Co-Founder of Southeast TechInventures and Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Ag TechInventures, Inc. Karen’s business experience encompasses both corporate and entrepreneurial worlds with over twenty-five years of successful leadership experience in start-ups, technology commercialization and executive management.
Peyton Anderson is CEO of Affinergy, a Duke spinout commercializing peptide linkers as coatings for medical devices, and is one of the Triangle’s notable and successful entrepreneurs. Previously, Peyton was founding CEO of SciQuest, Inc. and raised over $175 million in capital prior to the company’s IPO in 1999.

Greg Brown is President and Owner of Cardinal Finance which provides fractional CFO and other financial advisory services to small and mid-sized businesses. He is also the Administrator of Charlotte Angel Fund, one of the most active angel investor funds in North Carolina. His career has been devoted to serving entrepreneurs and the companies that they create as a trusted business partner and investor.

Patti Gillenwater is President, CEO and owner of Elinvar, a highly innovative executive search firm. Patti is an experienced business leader who has extensive nonprofit and professional association board experience. Patti’s experience as an entrepreneur is highlighted by her successful navigation of major changes in the industry and her creative approach to reinventing the business model of her firm with the result of sustaining business success while evolving and growing the firm’s capabilities and focus.

You can now browse the companies in all of our programs, as well as browse the organizations, mentors and experts who support our programs, plus so much more! What are you waiting for? Go ahead and check out our new site. Our new website is a work in progress and we plan to add more content and resources in the future. We welcome any feedback you have on our new site.

Company Updates

 

Ampogee, a 2016 Seed Grant Recipient, has been accepted to the first class of Techstars Kansas City Accelerator program. Ampogee is a cloud-based performance management platform that tracks and reports manufacturing processes in real time, reducing costs through sustainable increases in productivity of over 10%. MATI Founder, Tatiana Birgisson, was named one of Proctor & Gamble’s Top Women in Grocery in 2017. MATI Energy is a 2014 Seed Grant Recipient and is an alumni of SoarTriangle. The publication, Progressive Grocer, highlighted the growth of the MATI team from 8 to 25 employees, as well as the expansion to national retailers that led to a fourfold increase in distribution. TransLoc, a 2006 Seed Grant Recipient, announced this month a partnership with Google Maps. TransLoc’s web application enables all transit agencies to make their transit info accessible in Google Maps for free. This partnership is built on TransLoc Architect, a free and easy-to-use web application for transit agencies of all sizes to manage and share transit data. Read more.

Come out for the long awaited next Hillsborough Startup Meetup! This month will be at Mystery Brewing to connect with fellow entrepreneurs in a casual environment and learn about the NC IDEA Foundation.  Thom Ruhe, President & CEO of the NC IDEA Foundation (and proud resident of Hillsborough) will sponsor a round of drinks and share how the foundation supports business innovation and economic advancement in NC. The next consumer product focused happy hour is July 20, hosted by American Underground. Our goal is to support this growing community through a consistent meetup bringing mentors, investors and CPG entrepreneurs together

We plan to have two minutes for remarks at each event–one to feature an up and coming CPG startup in the audience, and the other to feature a mentor in the room who is interested in helping more CPG founders. Otherwise, this is a laid back gathering over free drinks on our rooftop patio and Google Lounge.
