As part of our ‘Meet Our Founders’ series today, we introduce Chip Kennedy, CEO and Founder of CivicReach, based in Raleigh, NC. CivicReach is the AI-native front desk for social service delivery. We help government agencies in 6 states connect over 1M residents to services.
Q: What problem are you trying to solve, and what influenced you to start your company?
A: I’ve spent my career searching for ways to build technology that helps people connect, especially in places and communities underserved by innovation. Building tools to help governments better connect with the communities they serve is the perfect challenge for my mission.
As a nonprofit director, I’ve seen firsthand where the social safety net lacks critical technology infrastructure. As a technologist, I know firsthand how technology meant to serve us too often stands in our way. And as a human being, I’ve been frustrated (like the rest of us) when my relationship with a government agency was frayed by hold times, missing paperwork, and inconvenient office hours.
CivicReach solves the problems created by bad customer service in government, especially for vulnerable folks most in need of help. It’s an absolute privilege to build a company working on these deeply challenging and deeply worthwhile problems.
Q: What are you most excited about right now? What keeps you up at night?
A: I’m energized by this moment of innovation. AI is proving to be both a pragmatic and radical tool helping industries modernize for the better. I’m especially excited to see people formerly left out of innovation – users, customers, and entrepreneurs alike – find new and accessible paths forward.
What keeps me up at night is the flip side of my own optimism. Innovation’s promise is too often not felt by those who need it most. I fear that the extraordinary power of AI, like so much technology in my lifetime, will be channeled into business models that extract, that monetize our attention and our emotions. That fear is one of many motivating factors in why I’m building CivicReach: to prove that AI can serve people, not just extract from them.
Q: What does the road ahead look like for your company?
A: The infrastructure of the social safety net is overdue for an upgrade. We see CivicReach being the engine to make it happen.
911 was created in this country 58 years ago, and ever since, we’ve had the security of knowing exactly who to call in an emergency. So I think it’s worth asking: why not have that same security when you need emergency shelter? Or food assistance? Or just to get a pothole fixed?
We see a future where people get the help they need in this country. Period. We see a future where technology is no longer the barrier to access, but the bridge – and where help is universal.
That’s what we’re building. We’re a mission-driven and ambitious company. We’re accountable to being mission-first and high-growth in everything we do.
Q: How will your NC IDEA grant funds advance your company?
A: The problems we’ll have to solve are difficult and worthwhile. Partnering with governments and nonprofits requires a special entrepreneurial patience. Whether it be sales, market education, or product implementation: everything moves exponentially slower in our industry. NC IDEA grant funds help us bridge the gap of long sales cycles and compete to be a company building something big, ambitious, and helpful to millions of people. The path is long, and NC IDEA helps us get there.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?
A: Creating community around an idea. It is incredibly satisfying to not only see our startup grow, but to bring more and more people to join the cause. I feel so much gratitude to those who have taken a risk to join – our teammates, customers, advisors, investors, partners, families, and the ecosystem at large – all believing in the idea of CivicReach, and joining hands to find a way to make it as positive and as big as possible. Building with a great big community is the highlight of doing this work.

- Come to Downtown Raleigh! We’d start with world-class coffee shop vibes, find trolls in Dix Park, picnic with Oakwood Pizza Box, and finish with dinner at Brewery Bhavana and a night market at Moore Square.
