Meet Our Founders: Naomi Kraut

Fun Mom Band

FUN MOM BAND- MICRO Fall 2021

Published March 9, 2022

Today, we introduce Naomi Kraut, founder of Fun Mom Band in Durham, NC. Fun Mom Band provides relief for the moms with Mom’s Fanny (pack your cool!), stocked with a lady flask and pill box.

Q: Naomi, what problem are you trying to solve and what influenced you to start your company?

A: I was inspired to start Fun Mom Band during the pandemic after releasing a puppet musical about Zoom school mom rage and hearing from moms that they felt seen. It made me pause and wonder: What IS made for moms that validates our dynamic identities? Who is looking out for our needs? Who cares about our stories?

I wanted to keep making irreverent mom content — to foster some levity and solidarity in these pandemic times by way of singing, swearing, fed-up puppets. But I also wanted to realize a lifelong dream of making a fanny pack for mom’s stuff, a day-to-night tool belt of relief essentials. Mom’s Fanny is about centering mom’s needs, about packing and keeping her cool via a lady flask and a travel pill box. It solves the problem that moms attend to everyone else’s needs before their own; but nobody puts Mom in a corner when she’s got Mom’s Fanny.

Q: What are you most excited about right now? What keeps you up at night?

A: I’m most excited about continuing to learn from N.C. talent in many different fields. I learned a ton from the Carolina Textile District about making a sewn goods product, and I’ve working with a great company, Tsuga, in Boone, NC to bring Mom’s Fanny to life. I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to manufacture a denim product in North Carolina, and as corny as it sounds, this project has already connected me in a meaningful way to my adopted state. What keeps me up at night are all of the things that I don’t know I don’t know! I will inevitably make so many mistakes, but that is part of the humbling journey and why I’m so grateful to have support and people I can ask.

Q: What other passions do you have besides your business?

A: I took up the double bass a couple of years ago and then the electric, and I’ve loved getting back into music by playing with the Indie Strings Orchestra in Durham. After a long hiatus, I’m back to playing and enjoying my oboe. I also love dancing and just don’t do it enough. And I might be a little bit crazy about my crazy pets — my Devon Rex cat and my pit bull dog.
