We are expanding our team to better serve a growing community of entrepreneurs, from our mountains to the coast of North Carolina. We are looking for someone who is excited about working with startups and the outcomes that those startups will create for the economy. So, we are adding a Senior Director, Finance.

Generally speaking, the position will manage all financial and accounting related activities for the foundation, akin to what is generally considered CFO duties; as well as participating in a variety of programming.

Specifically, this is a senior position with the foundation requiring someone with a minimum 10+ years of work experience performing a variety of the tasks listed below. Experience working in foundations (budgets, 990s, audits, and investment/s management) is preferred.  Working externally with entrepreneurs, companies and organizations in the entrepreneurial ecosystems of North Carolina will be required. Work experience at a startup or an entrepreneurial support organization would also be a plus.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Senior Director, Finance

Senior Director, Finance plays a central role in the implementation and day-to-day management of the organization’s financial activities, as well as supporting a variety of other Foundation activities. The Senior Director reports to the CEO.


  • Management and oversight of all financial matters of NC IDEA
  • Internal controls, budgeting, reporting and cash forecasting
  • Support applicable board finance and audit committee activities
  • Support CEO and NC IDEA Board with selection of investment managers and vehicles for NC IDEA investment portfolio
  • Manage relationships with all key service providers including investment managers, bankers and auditors
  • Manage and track grant accounting and payments
  • Manage employee payroll, benefits and related HR matters
  • Prepare and present financial reports to board of directors at quarterly meetings


  • Participate in short-term and long-term programmatic development and planning
  • Assist in establishing program goals, objectives and activities
  • Review program applications
  • Preparation of award agreements and program MOUs
  • Assist in management of grant recipient and program participant portfolios to ensure proper reporting and administration of requirements
  • Lead grant recipient and program participant audits, as needed
  • Serve as a representative of organization at various community events
  • Support various ad hoc projects supporting strategic initiatives
  • Assist colleagues as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by CEO
