The Friday Nooner: GrepBeat Happy Hour Recap, Guest Sonja Ebron (Courtroom5)

This is the second consecutive week of experimenting with our new format, which loosely resembles the daytime talk show The View. In this episode, Pete, Joe and WRAL TechWire’s Chantal Allam—who is our guest co-host for October—talk about everything tech in the Triangle from Richard Holcomb being back in the news to blockchain.

Our featured guest is Sonja Ebron, Co-Founder and CEO of Courtroom5, which we’ve written about multiple times. Courtroom5 makes an automated legal toolbox for people handling complex claims without a lawyer. This includes divorces, debt collection, foreclosures and more.

Here are some highlights from today’s episode:

  • Pete and Joe kicked off the show talking about last night’s GrepBeat Happy Hour at Lynnwood Brewing Concern in Raleigh. They also showcased a series of quick clips and photos from the event. Pete brought up Richard Holcomb—who was a guest on our Exit Stories podcast a few weeks ago—writing for Triangle Business Journal about his deal with Microsoft in the ’90s. He and his Q+E Software team refused Microsoft’s initial acquisition offer of $1 million and instead choose to do a $1-per-Excel-copy deal. That deal was a huge hit and in 1994, with the company doing $10-20 million in sales, they exited for $40 million.
  • When Chantal joined the guys, they briefly talked about how the pandemic has prompted people to experiment with live streaming and podcasting. Chantal also mentioned her recent TechWire live stream with Kaleido co-founders Sophia Lopez and Steve Cerveny. Kaleido offers an enterprise blockchain solution for modern business networks.
  • Sonja entered next, giving the trio a sneak peek of her elevator pitch about Courtroom5 for Venture Atlanta’s ninth annual conference next week; Venture Atlanta selected the company to attend. Yes, it’s big news! Sonja also discusses the story behind Courtroom5, including the reasoning behind the number 5 in the name. While Sonja and her fellow co-founder were throwing out possible company names, Luniz’s song I Got 5 on It was playing in the background. The rest is history.
