As part of our ‘Meet Our Founders’ series today, we introduce Jeremiah Smith and Ed Carroll, cofounders of Edison Marks based in Asheville, NC. Edison Marks distills the ins and outs of cybersecurity into personalized, easy action steps, for businesses who want to reduce their risk of attacks without developing expertise in the subject.
Q: What problem are you trying to solve and what influenced you to start your company?
A: There’s a real ‘shopability’ problem when it comes to cybersecurity products and services, particularly for small and medium business operators. We want to stop asking operators to navigate this problem alone and, instead, nudge them to take action in a manner that we think is actually going to make an improvement.
Q: What are you most excited about right now? What keeps you up at night?
A: No one we’ve found has tried to tackle this problem the way we are…by living at the intersection of behavioral science and cybersecurity. That’s surprising and exciting. Not only can we have genuinely positive impact on the business lives of SME operators (both Ed and I grew up in small-business-owner blue-collar families) but we can do that while carving new ground. Fun times.
Q: What is your greatest fear as an entrepreneur?
A: Failing to execute as effectively as the business requires in order to reach a person we could have genuinely helped.
