Published January 15, 2025
As part of our ‘Meet Our Founders’ series today, we introduce Paula Leon, CEO and Founder of Blean based in Raleigh, NC. Blean promotes sustainable and safe menstrual care for individuals who use menstrual cups and need to enhance the cleaning experience in public settings.
Q: What problem are you trying to solve and what influenced you to start your company?
A: At Blean, we’re solving the challenge of using menstrual cups in public, where privacy and cleanliness can be difficult. My passion for women’s health and medical devices and my mission to break period stigma inspired me to start this company. I envision a world where sustainable menstrual care is accessible, empowering women everywhere to manage their periods with confidence.
Q: What does the road ahead look like for your company?
A: The road ahead for Blean is focused on developing high-fidelity prototypes to gain critical insights into our product’s impact and refine its design. We’re also building B2B partnerships with menstrual cup companies, women’s health influencers, and nonprofits, creating a network that not only promotes our solution but also amplifies their missions. Additionally, we aim to collaborate on FemTech initiatives dedicated to enhancing dignity and accessibility in women’s health worldwide.
Q: How will your NC IDEA grant funds advance your company?
A: The NC IDEA grant will lay the foundation for Blean, helping us validate our product and refine our business model. It provides access to invaluable mentorship for building strategic partnerships and connects us with a thriving entrepreneurial community. This support will be instrumental in kickstarting our journey and setting strong pillars for future growth.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?
A: What I’ve enjoyed most about starting Blean is the challenge of creating a unique product that currently has no equal in the market. It’s incredibly fulfilling to do what I love while advancing solutions that can positively impact millions. Plus, being part of a passionate and innovative community keeps me inspired every day.
