Partner Spotlight: Manufacturing Solutions Center


As part of our ‘Partner Spotlight’ series, we introduce our 2020 ECOSYSTEM partner, Manufacturing Solutions Center. MSC is part of Catawba Valley Community College, working to have a positive economic impact on the community, region, and country. They work with traditional manufacturers, as well as with manufacturing start-ups helping to provide solutions to problems and move companies forward.



Describe your organization in 25 words or less.

The Manufacturing Solution Center (MSC) supports US manufacturing and creates/retains US manufacturing jobs through prototyping, product development, testing services and our on-site incubator.

How does your organization support entrepreneurs?

The MSC has an on-site incubator for manufacturing start-ups. We also provide textile and non-textile product development and prototyping services, sourcing assistance, and product testing accredited to ISO 17025. Having all of these services and resources within one roof has created a powerful ecosystem for business creation and economic impact.

What problem is your organization trying to solve?

The Manufacturing Solutions Center is a team of “problem-solvers,” which focus on the issues that start-ups and manufacturers face in creating new products, testing product claims, and improving products and processes to help US manufacturers increase sales and improve efficiencies.

Who benefits from your organization’s work?

Manufacturers and entrepreneurs throughout the state of NC and across the US. The Manufacturing Solutions Center’s customer list contains over 800 companies in North Carolina, and over 3000 in total representing all 50 states. The ripple effect of assisting manufacturers throughout the country comes back to NC…in the form of purchasing packaging or materials from NC companies or through logistics and distribution services that NC companies provide.

Describe the entrepreneurial landscape in your organization’s broader community/region. What do entrepreneurs in your community need most to build a successful business? How is your organization helping to address this need(s)?

Entrepreneurs in the manufacturing environment face significant start-up costs, with capital equipment which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Manufacturing Solutions Center entrepreneurial ecosystem includes equipment and support that allows entrepreneurs to minimize these expenditures while focusing on bringing their product ideas to life. The Center also provides product development support, a prototyping lab, and testing services which allow start-ups to more rapidly validate their products and bring them to market.
